Everyone is from somewhere. Not necessarily the place where you were born, but rather the place that you’re from. For me, although life began in New York City, if you ask where I’m from I’ll reply that I’m fortunate enough to be from a city nestled in the mountains of North Carolina by the name of Asheville. Although for the better part of my adolescence I tried to resist it, I am a product of this place. It does not wash off, and hence you see me all growns-up in the world, riding around in a colorful RV, capturing music. Those in the know would claim that this is a very “Asheville” thing to do, and it is.
The Toubab Krewe has been all over the world and their international brand of music is a reflection of their well traveled lives and dedication to their craft. Yet whenever you read something about them, or see an interview and they’re asked where they’re from they say Asheville, and of course, those in the know who have heard Toubab before could also claim that their music is a very “Asheville” type of sound. It’s ecclectic, it’s white boys playing African rythms and mixing it with jam band headiness, and making their own brand of awesome. That’s what I mean by very Asheville…
So even though the van got sick the day Toubab Krewe was in town, we still wanted to meet up with them and get some type of a session in. Cause you know, stuff can still sound good outside of a van… So we jammed in a room that day, had some bbq, it was all very Asheville. I dug it, it’s always nice to get a bit of that back home vibe. Unfortunately, most of that vibe will live only in the past. A faulty cable has left us with only one contribution, albeit a great contribution to our audio/video library. I’m not stressing it though, they’re from Asheville and they’re always on the road, I’m from Asheville, I try to always be on the road. I’m sure we’ll cross paths again.
