When I was young I remember wearing honesty like a merit badge. I prided myself on never telling a lie, and I didn’t. Until of course I slipped up and I did. Nothing big, just a little white lie, which of course might be the most dangerous of them all, because it’s so easy to do. It would be a lie to tell you that I stopped at just one, because I didn’t. As we get older white lies become more frequent, they make things easier, and sometimes easy is good. I’d like to think that to this day I’ve never told a lie that hurt, and never told a lie that really mattered, and I hope things stay that way. I can however say that honesty is hard. It’s something you have to work on and it’s something you have to want to be. So to find honesty in someone’s music, that’s a gem. When a songwriter stands in front of a microphone and pours out their honesty in front of an audience, that’s saying something.
If Jess Williamson is telling lies in these songs, well she’s doing a damn good job of keeping a straight face, because I honestly believe each and every word, and that’s the truth.
